Choosing the Right Banner Material for Your Event

January 13, 20264 min read
Different banner materials

Not all banners are created equal. The material you choose can make the difference between a banner that looks great for years and one that falls apart after a single event. Here's everything you need to know.

The Big Three: PVC, Mesh, and Fabric

Most banners fall into one of three categories. Each has its strengths and ideal use cases.

PVC Vinyl Banners (Most Popular)

The workhorse of the banner world. PVC vinyl is durable, affordable, and versatile.

Best for:

  • Outdoor events and storefronts
  • Grand openings and sales
  • Construction site signage
  • Sports events and sponsorships
  • Any situation where durability matters

Pros:

  • Water-resistant and weatherproof
  • Vibrant color reproduction
  • Affordable for large sizes
  • Lasts 2-3 years outdoors with proper care

Cons:

  • Can be heavy in large sizes
  • Not ideal for high-wind areas (see mesh below)
  • Has a "shiny" look that some find less premium

Mesh Banners (Wind-Resistant)

Mesh banners have tiny holes that allow wind to pass through, reducing stress on the banner and mounting hardware.

Best for:

  • Fence wraps and construction sites
  • Building facades and scaffolding
  • Windy outdoor locations
  • Large-format installations

Pros:

  • Won't act like a sail in wind
  • Lighter weight than solid vinyl
  • Extremely durable
  • Great for oversized banners

Cons:

  • Colors appear slightly muted due to holes
  • Not ideal for close-up viewing
  • Slightly higher cost than standard PVC

Fabric Banners (Premium Look)

Fabric banners offer a softer, more upscale appearance. They're printed using dye-sublimation for rich, saturated colors.

Best for:

  • Trade shows and conferences
  • Retail displays and backdrops
  • Photo opportunities and step-and-repeats
  • Indoor events where appearance matters

Pros:

  • No glare—photographs beautifully
  • Soft, premium feel
  • Wrinkles can be steamed out
  • Lightweight and easy to transport
  • Machine washable

Cons:

  • Not waterproof (indoor use only)
  • Higher cost than vinyl
  • Can wrinkle during shipping

Quick Decision Guide

Don't Forget the Finishing

How your banner is finished matters just as much as the material:

  • Grommets: Metal rings for rope or bungee mounting (most common)
  • Pole pockets: Sewn sleeves for sliding onto poles
  • Hemmed edges: Reinforced edges prevent fraying
  • Wind slits: Cuts in the banner to reduce wind load

We include hemmed edges and grommets on all our banners at no extra charge.
